# token (token)

A small chunk of text—roughly three-quarters of a word—that AI providers use to measure and price the prompt you send and the answer you get back.

**Example:** For example, setting `max_completion_tokens` on every AI call caps how many tokens a single answer can generate and helps control your spend.
