# What is a repo? Git and checkpoints

> A repo (repository) is your project folder plus its full history: Git records every checkpoint, so you can see what changed and go back to any version.

## Analogy

It's a folder with a memory, like the version history in Google Docs, but for a whole folder. Every checkpoint has a note saying what changed.

## How it works

git is the tool that keeps the memory. Each checkpoint is a commit: a snapshot of what changed, with a short message such as “Add the contact form”.

The memory lives in a hidden folder called `.git` inside your project. Never delete it: it's the history itself.

Because every commit is kept, a mistake is never final. Your agent can show you the history, compare versions, or return to the last one that worked.

## In your project

Your agent commits after every working step, with a clear message in your language. Ask it to show you the commits any time: you'll see your project's story, one line per step.

## Copy for your agent

```text
Show me my project's commits and explain each one in a sentence.
```
